The Steam Boat Project
Design it. Build it. Test it.
A hands-on STEM project where pupils design, build and test their own candle-powered steam boats while exploring the basic science of steam, propulsion and hydrodynamics. Based on the classic 1920s pop-pop boat, this practical table-top activity combines simple tools, creativity and experimentation.

What is the Steam Boat Project?
Pupils create their own small steam-powered boats using simple tools and materials before testing them in a paddling pool. The activity introduces key scientific ideas through practical learning and gives pupils the chance to build, test and improve their own design.

Design Your Boat
Pupils plan and prepare their boat design.

Build with Simple Tools
Use practical tools and materials to construct the boat.

Add the Steam System
Create the candle-powered propulsion system based on a traditional pop-pop boat.

Test it in Water
Launch the completed boats in a small paddling pool and observe how they perform.
Steam
Explore how heat and steam can be used to create movement.
Forces & Motion
Explore movement, resistance and direction in a practical aquatic environment.
Science in Action
Watch complex STEM concepts come to life through practical experimentation and play.
Propulsion
Understand how a boat moves itself through the water, exploring the relationship between power and displacement.
Hydrodynamics
See how boat shape and water resistance affect performance.
Design & Testing
Build, test, compare and improve designs until the boat runs true.
Make It Your Own
To expand this project we can also add balloon powered boats, or skills with tools, pre designs and more.
